On warm Saturday afternoon Wirral returned to competitive action with a Cheshire Cup tie away at C&N. A number of a players were still away on holiday but, nevertheless, we were able to field a strong side. It was great to welcome back Nick Hearn after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury and this was of course his first competitive game as the new captain.
Joe Adnams started his 100th game whereas, at the other end of the scale, Ben Lewis made his debut at 10 and, in the second half, Alfie Kimpton and Che Hannigan made their debuts from the bench.
C&N play at level 6 and were no doubt hoping to cause an upset. The first 15 mins or so were very close. Wirral opened the scoring but C&N hit back with a converted try to lead 7-5. Wirral, however, then began to take control and dominated the rest of the game. In total Wirral ran in 9 tries with Man of the Match, Will Morris, scoring 4, Chris Crowley 2 and 1 each from Dan Carrol, Joe Adnams and Adam Don. Jimmy Annetts kicked a penalty and 5 conversions whilst Ben Brooks also added a conversion. To their credit C&N never gave up but were unable to breach the Wirral defence for a 2nd time.
Next week Wirral return to league action with a tough away game at Kendal.
Apologies for the short report but our regular ace reporter Richard McNeil is away on holiday.
