The 1st XV travelled to the very much improved Blackburn and with debutants Scott Southwell and Will Morris, put in an excellent performance in testing weather conditions, succumbing to a late try in a 17-9 loss. We are on the road again this Saturday with a 4-hour coach journey to Alnwick, a big shout out to the boys who give their time up for the club, maintaining our status in the Northern Premier League. The 2nd XV`s game was cancelled when the boys arrived at Sedgley Park only to be confronted with waterlogged pitches, not great communication there!! Thankyou to the boys who immediately travelled back to the Wirral and put their boots on to help the 3rd team. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of 24-17 score, but the club and players showed their true spirit and ethos to rugby to make sure the game went ahead. This week the 2nds entertain Chester and the 4th`s have a home game against Mossley Hill.
Saturday also saw another milestone and history made, with our Ladies entertaining Liverpool Collegiate Ladies at the Memorial ground. They made a fantastic start winning 38-10 in a memorable game, well done to the team on a successful day both on and off the pitch.
There were some Cheshire Cup games played on Sunday, the U16`s lost in a very muddy battle to Bowden, the lads performed admirably and coaches Gary Wilson and Kurt Sturzy were thrilled with their performance. Lee Vickers (Welshman) would have been there as a coach, but instead chose to go to Murrayfield to watch Scotland v England. His trip was clearly enjoyed, although the thought of Lee in a kilt, not a great one.
The senior colts travelled to Chester and in a hard-hitting close game were victors 13-10 and now move into the semi-final of the elite county competition in Cheshire. A big thank you to Leo Simmonds, Mark McCall and the rest of the coaching team. They have all supported the boys from U6`s and hopefully we can bring the trophy back to Clatterbridge, as a fitting finale to all their hard work.
Wirral legend Mr Tony O`Brien has recently sent messages out regarding O2 Touch Rugby, the response has been amazing and he has asked me to post this:
Just an update on the Touch Rugby in April
The numbers are coming in and so far, we nearly have enough for three full teams of twelve. We could do with a few more to allow for the days when player are not available.
I am still considering if we should do it at an evening or a weekend. So perhaps you can give me your preference so I can get some idea what suits most people.
Maybe someone is clever enough to set up one of these polls things. (Beyond me).
Thinking out loud, I intend to keep the session down to about 1 hours so it does not take up to much of your time from home and loved ones. This can be flexible depending on how it goes.
Please contact Tony, tony_obrien1@sky.com if you are interested, it will be great for your fitness, socialising and getting back down to the club.
The six nations started with a bang, Corny has set up a committee with the slogan “We want Eddie out,” so if you have any complaints about England’s performance against the Scots, please feel free to discuss with him. Apologies to Clive, Les and Ron who were expecting Haggis, Tatties and Neeps on Saturday, see Rob re complaints!!
England play Italy on Sunday at 3pm, so please come down, support the club and see if Eddie can get this one tactically right. Rob will also be doing his Pizzas for the game, so another reason to come along and watch the game.
For most of the first team games the pre match lunches are sponsored, which is very much appreciated. The game versus York was kindly sponsored by our very own “Goldmember,” Phil Hacking, a man of many disguises and valuable supporter of the club. During one of Robs wonderful meals, Phil was somewhat surprised at what being the match day sponsor entails. He actually thought that his table would receive their food first and he would get a mention at the speech, so eloquently provided by MC Mr Dave Harvey. No…No…No Phil, that`s not the way it works!! Phil did get a massive thank you, one of which I back hugely, he is so kind for doing this and it is much appreciated, however he was in the bog at the time and was unaware. Phil did get payback, I had told the York 8, a good friend of mine, to score the first and last try, which he did, winning Phil £100.
Kind regards
